How to repair a hole in the elbow of a sweater or shirt

A hole in the elbow is one of the most common damages to sweaters and shirts. The fabric wears out when we lean against tables, work at desks, or use the garment frequently. But a hole in the elbow doesn't mean the garment is ruined. It just means it's used.

In this guide, we show you how you can easily repair a hole in your elbow at home with a self-adhesive patch – quickly, neatly and without a needle or sewing machine.

Why do holes appear in the elbow?

The elbow is a high-friction point. When you sit at a desk or rest your arm on a surface, constant pressure occurs. Over time, the fibers weaken and the fabric becomes thinner until a hole appears.

So it's not poor quality that's causing the problem. It's normal use.

How to mend a hole in your elbow – step by step

1. Clean the area

Make sure the fabric is clean and dry. Wipe the area around the hole with a damp cloth and let it dry completely. Avoid fabric softener as it can reduce adhesion.

2. Cut the team patch

Cut a piece that covers the hole with at least a one centimeter margin all around. Round the edges for better durability. For sweatshirts and cotton garments, we recommend Laglapp for textiles .

3. Place the patch

Peel off the protective paper and place the patch over the hole. For a discreet repair, you can attach it to the inside. For a classic elbow patch look, you can attach it to the outside.

4. Press firmly

Press from the center out to the edges to avoid air bubbles. For extra hold, use low heat with baking paper in between.

5. Let rest

Let the garment rest for at least an hour before use. It is recommended to wait 24 hours before washing for the first time.

Discreet or visible repair?

When repairing a hole in your elbow, you have two choices:

Discreet repair: Match the color and place the patch on the inside. The result is almost invisible.

Visible detail: Choose a contrasting color and place the patch on the outside for classic elbow reinforcement.

Both options work. It's a matter of style and preference.

Common mistakes to avoid

1. Using too small a patch. It must cover the area properly.

2. Applying to damp fabric. This will impair adhesion.

3. Washing too early. Allow the glue to cure properly.

Which product should you use?

For sweaters, sweatshirts and cotton garments, we recommend Laglap for textiles . It is flexible, durable and follows the movement of the fabric naturally.

For thinner shirts and finer materials , Laglapp Percale for fine fabrics is a better option thanks to its thin and supple structure.

Summary

Fixing holes in your elbow is one of the easiest repairs you can do yourself. It only takes a few minutes and can extend the life of your garment by years.

The next time you discover a hole – don’t see it as the end. See it as a simple decision to repair instead of replace.
