Repair your college sweatshirt at home – easily and sustainably

Repair your college sweatshirt at home – easily and sustainably
A soft sweatshirt quickly becomes a favorite, but over time it can develop small holes, frayed elbows or thin sections of fabric. That doesn't mean you have to throw it away. With Patchlab's self-adhesive patch for textiles, you can mend your sweatshirt at home in just a few minutes - without a needle, thread or sewing machine. The result is stylish, durable and comfortable against the skin.
In this guide, we show you how to easily repair cotton college sweatshirts and sweatshirts using our fabric patches. You'll save money, reduce waste, and extend the life of the garment you already love to wear - quickly and easily.
Prepare the shirt for mending
1. Examine the fabric
Look at where the fabric is damaged and determine how much repair is needed. The fabric patch works perfectly on college sweatshirts thanks to its strong adhesion and soft texture. It sticks well to both the smooth outside and the brushed soft inside of the sweatshirt.
2. Clean the area
For best adhesion, the surface should be completely clean and dry. Wipe the area around the hole with a damp cloth and a little mild soap. Then let the shirt dry completely before applying the patch. Avoid fabric softener - it can impair adhesion.
3. Cut the team patch
Cut a piece that covers the entire injury with about a centimeter margin all around. Round the corners slightly to reduce the risk of the edges coming loose. Our team patches are available in several colors – choose a shade that matches the jersey for a discreet result or use a contrasting color for a personal expression.
How to mend your college sweatshirt with an adhesive team patch
Step 1 – Place the team patch
Carefully peel off the backing paper and place the patch over the hole. For a discreet repair, you can attach it to the inside, while a patch on the outside can add a stylish, modern touch. Press the patch down evenly with your hand.
Step 2 – Press firmly
Start from the center and press outwards to remove any air. Then press with your hand or use the back of a spoon for extra pressure. For an even stronger bond, gently heat the patch with an iron on low heat with baking paper in between.
Step 3 – Let the repair rest
Let the shirt sit for at least an hour before use. This allows the glue to harden and create a strong and smooth bond with the fabric. It is recommended to wait 24 hours before washing the garment.
Tips for best results
1. Lay the shirt flat
Place the shirt on a flat surface when attaching the patch. This will give an even result and better printing.
2. Use the right size
Make sure the patch covers the hole with a good margin. Pieces that are too small risk falling off at the edges after washing.
3. Avoid stretching the fabric
Let the shirt lie naturally without stretching when you attach the patch. This will make it hold up better with movement and use.
Common mistakes to avoid
1. Attach to damp fabric
If the fabric is damp, the glue will not adhere properly. Always make sure the garment is completely dry before you start.
2. Too little pressure
If you don't press hard enough, air bubbles can form under the patch. Make sure to press firmly from the center outwards.
3. For quick washing
Wait at least a day before washing the repaired shirt so that the glue has time to harden properly.
Care and washing instructions after repair
Wash the shirt at a maximum of 30 degrees and let it air dry. Avoid using a dryer as heat can affect the adhesive surface. If cared for properly, the repair will last as long as the garment itself.
